Thirsk and The World of James Harriot

Monday 09 May, 2022

Today we are visiting the Traditional Market Town of Thirsk in North Yorkshire, Boasting the spectacular backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors & famous for its Racecourse, 15th century church, James Harriot, Thomas Lord and today its fabulous Market with its many amazing stalls .

We are also stepping into the world of James Harriot, to see where the worlds most famous Vet lived, worked and wrote his incredibly successful series of books based on his own experiences as a young North Yorkshire country vet. This fully restored 1940’s home and surgery in Thirsk transforms you back in time to what life was like when James was practicing,  see his original 1938 Austin Seven car, step into the tv set of All Creatures Great and Small.  Try your hand at being a vet as you step through the famous Red Door of 23, Kirkgate, Thirsk. known in his books as Skeldale House, Darrowby. This magical time capsule retains many original furnishings, the family room, practice office, basement converted into an air raid shelter, during WW2,  the dispensary, veterinary room & foldyard are all frozen in time.

The Interactive Gallery is so much fun, full of fascinating facts & I’m assured our visitors will love it, as you  test your skills, knowledge and reflexes while there’s that ‘Not to be Missed’ opportunity to Place your Hand up a Cow’s Bottom !!  Obviously an Essential skill that every Vet has to learn.
